Healing from Religious Trauma

Safe, affirming therapy to let go of past beliefs and learn to trust yourself.

Online mental health therapy in California, Oregon, and Washington. In-person and online therapy in Eugene, Oregon.

You have been through so much

You struggle to express your needs. You were taught that your worth depended on obedience, that saying “no”—to your parents, to a partner, to the church itself—was disobedience. You were punished swiftly and with a heavy hand for any trace of defiance. You still carry those memories to this day.

You wonder who you are. Leaving your religion meant leaving your sense of purpose and belonging. There is an empty space where the church used to be. Even though you made the healthiest choice to leave, you feel uncertain about yourself and your life’s meaning.

You fear the afterlife. You wonder: “What if I’m wrong, and I’m going to hell?” Your body tenses at the sound of a hymn or a street preacher’s voice. The nightmares still creep in, replaying scenes of the rapture or demons or punishment. You might even find yourself following old rituals just in case, because the terror runs that deep.

You doubt yourself. You say “Was it really that bad?” “Surely other people had it worse.” You replay your experiences in your mind over and over again, hoping to make sense of it. You question your own memories, and your own perception of your relationships.

Your pain is real.

You don’t have to carry it alone.

How Can I Help You?

Therapy Treatment for Depression

Depression can feel like you are stuck in a pool of thick mud. You can barely move. You struggle to do anything. You are just trying to survive. But the worst part is, you beat yourself for being stuck there. People are often relieved at how healing it can be to talk about their depression with a person who understands. A depression therapist can work wonders on your mood, self-esteem, and sense of hopefulness about your ability to get to a better place in your life. I offer holistic therapy that considers all aspects of your life and experiences, to offer you the best possible insights and solutions.

Therapy Treatment for Anxiety

Anxiety is a powerful force that affects your mind and body. It is a nervous anticipation of a threat. It can inhibit you from living the life you want to live, as you constantly avoid people, places and things that might trigger it. An anxiety therapist in Eugene Oregon may be just what you need to start learning how to manage your anxiety. My goal is to collaborate with you and understand your anxieties, so that I may support you in living the life you want to live. I use a variety of techniques, from DBT therapy, CBT, and EMDR therapy, which can help you to reduce anxiety and its impact on your mind and body.

How Does Therapy Work?

For those seeking Eugene mental health services, and for all locations, the first step is a free 15-minute phone consultation to answer your questions, explain my therapy style, and see if we are a good fit.

If you want to move forward with online therapy, we will set up our first intake/assessment session, which is a video call (approximately 90 minutes), where I ask you many questions about your background, history, and what brings you into therapy now. During that conversation, I will collaborate with you to develop treatment goals. I often use the question: “what would you like to be different as a result of therapy? What goals do you have, however big or small?” Once we decide on your goals, we can start meeting regularly for our therapy sessions.
